GOSHEN – An Orange County Court jury Wednesday convicted a Newburgh man for illegally possessing a loaded 9 mm semi-automatic pistol in the City of Newburgh.
Because of Corey Owens’ past criminal history, he faces up to 15 years in state prison when sentenced in September.
On March 1 of this year, city police received a report of a man with a handgun in the vicinity of Van Ness Street. A police officer monitoring street cameras observed a man toss his jacket when police vehicles approached. Cops recovered the jacket and found the gun with 10 bullets inside.
Owens was then stopped by police.
His prior criminal convictions include a previous conviction for felony weapons possession, felony assault with the use of a weapon, and a previous felony conviction for animal fighting.
“This defendant’s prior criminal history, as well as his illegal possession of a loaded firearm, demonstrates that he is a danger to the community and deserves a very lengthy state prison sentence,” said District Attorney David Hoovler.
