MONTICELLO – Nyyair Carney, a 24-year-old man from Port Jervis was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Thursday in Sullivan County Court according to District Attorney Meagan Galligan. Carney is also required to serve five years of post-release supervision.
Carney was arrested in Liberty on April 4, 2021, after police responded to a fight at the Sunoco gas station in Liberty.
Carney had previously pled guilty before Sullivan County Court Judge Jim Farrell, admitting that he illegally possessed a loaded and operable Rohm .22 magnum revolver when police apprehended him at the fight.
Carney has a previous felony conviction, rendering him ineligible to possess any firearm.
DA Galligan said, “The police who responded to this incident – including members of the State Police and Sheriff’s Office – were in a very dangerous situation; their decisive and professional conduct kept them and others secure,” adding ” Their work on this case and many others is commendable. I am grateful to them and to our community members who reported this situation and helped make our community a safer place.”
Carney remains incarcerated at the Sullivan County Jail awaiting transport to the New York State Department of Corrections.
