POUGHKEEPSIE – City officials in Poughkeepsie are aggressively seeking lifeguards and other staff for both city pools and have increased the rate of pay for lifeguards and pool managers to attract candidates.  They are also offering a signing bonus and an additional bonus for employees in those positions that work the full season.

Lifeguard salaries have been raised from $16 to $22 an hour, and pool manager positions have been raised from $20 to $25 an hour.  The city already had increased the pay for attendants as it looks to open both the Pulaski Park and Spratt Park pools.

In addition, the city is offering $500 sign-up bonuses for these positions and an additional $500 for those completing their term of the seasonal employment. The city is also providing $500 bonuses to pool workers who refer a fully certified lifeguard who completes the season.

“The City of Poughkeepsie, like many municipalities, understands there has been a shortage of lifeguards, but we are determined to do all we can to get up to staff to open both of our municipal pools,” said Mayor Rob Rolison.

Lifeguards are responsible for the protection of persons swimming and for the recreational facilities. Pool managers monitor the day-to-day activities of the pools and can also perform lifeguarding duties.

The city also has openings for pool attendants who are responsible for cleaning and maintaining order at the pools. Pool attendant salaries are now $13.50 an hour.

The city is working to open the pools to city residents, and entrance fees will be waived again this year. A final determination will be made based on whether the city can adhere to the state safety and staff requirements.
