CITY OF NEWBURGH – The field of Democratic candidates for the new 39th District State Senate seat is growing by the day.

Orange County Legislator Kevindaryan Lujan, who represents the City of Newburgh, Sunday announced that he will be seeking his party’s nomination in the race against Republican Poughkeepsie Mayor Rob Rolison.

The district includes Eastern Orange County, Southern Dutchess and western Putnam County.

On Saturday evening, Dutchess County Democratic Party Chairwoman Julie Shiroishi announced her candidacy for the post and earlier in the day, Poughkeepsie Common Council Majority Leader Evan Menist said he was exploring a run.

“As an Orange County legislator and community activist I have been a vocal supporter of good cause eviction legislation, I have pushed for affordable housing, for reproductive rights, I have been an advocate for economic and racial justice and I have stood up to fossil fuels companies who have opposed environmental justice and renewable energy,” said Lujan. “As your state senator, I pledge to continue that fight and ensure that the Hudson Valley and all of our residents feel heard. We can and must lead on affordable housing, we must connect our communities to jobs by investing in transportation and we must put our community first.”
