NEWBURGH – All violent crime in the City of Newburgh in the first five months of the year is down 13 percent, Police Commissioner Jose Gomerez told Mid-Hudson Newburgh on Friday.

The commissioner said murders were down 100 percent – there were none so far this year while one occurred during the same period in 2021.

Rapes were also down 100 percent while robberies were down 17 percent and aggravated assaults dropped by 13 percent, the commissioner said.

At last week’s city council meeting, several residents expressed concern about the rising opioid crisis and urged the city to equip their officers with Narcan.

Commissioner Gomerez told Mid-Hudson News on Friday that all officers are equipped with the opioid reversal medicinal and have been trained and certified to use it when necessary.
