MONTICELLO – Sullivan County has a population of under 80,000, yet 24 percent of all deaths are from drug overdoses. That frightening statistic comes from County Coroner Albee Bockman.

He told the county legislature’s Public Safety and Law Enforcement Committee on Thursday that in April, five of nine deaths where autopsies were performed resulted from drug overdoses.

“Just to show you how bad it is, in the last 45 days we’ve had 10 overdose deaths in this county and we are off to a start this month – it’s only the fifth – we have three already,” he told lawmakers.

The county has an opioid task force that is working daily to bring those numbers down.
