RYE – Since January 1, 2020, there have been 71 vehicles stolen from residents’ driveways in the City of Rye. In each case, the vehicle was unlocked with the keys left inside.

In addition to the stolen vehicles, 66 others were entered with property stolen; all were unlocked.

Since March 11 of this year, city police said 11 vehicles were stolen.

Police said the cars stolen in Rye have been used to commit crimes in other areas. Cars have been recovered in Hartford, Connecticut and Newark, New Jersey.

Suspects in stolen car cases have proven they will not stop when a traffic stop is initiated by officers. They will engage in high- speed pursuits with little regard for public safety.

The police are asking the public for assistance by locking car doors and removing keys or key fobs from inside their vehicles. Take personal property inside and out of view.

This year four vehicles were stolen in broad daylight on two separate Sunday afternoons.

In videos obtained by the police, the suspects are usually dressed in black from head to toe with their faces covered and wearing work gloves.
