NEWBURGH – When state roads run through cities, they become the responsibility of those municipalities, but the City of Newburgh may ask Albany to alter that.

If the state were to allow that, Mayor Torrance Harvey said it would be a catch-22 situation.

“If you designate it as a state highway, then the state Department of Transportation would be responsible for milling, paving and maintaining and the upkeep, but then the downside is $1 million grant that we get for tourism or something at the state level and that we would probably forego that,” he said.

In Newburgh, State Routes 9W and 52 run through the city and at present, are the responsibility of the local government.
