KINGSTON – A total of 60 firearms were turn in to law enforcement at a gun buyback even in Kingston on Saturday.

It was the latest such event conducted by State Attorney General Letitia James, along with the Kingston Police Department and Ulster County Sheriff’s Office.

To date, James’ programs statewide have taken more than 2,700 guns out of communities since she took office in 2019.

“Gun violence is one of the biggest public health crises we face, and it continues to endanger our communities,” James said. Those gun buyback programs are “a critical part of our efforts to combat this violence and save lives,” she said.

Ulster County Sheriff Juan Figueroa said there tends to be more violence as the weather gets warmer, “and these collaborations help us get ahead of that.”

“Every single weapon we can get off the street, or prevent from getting into the hands of someone who shouldn’t have one is critical in our efforts to end gun violence,” said Kingston Mayor Steven Noble.
