FISHKILL – Ryan Floryan, convicted of manslaughter in 2013, has been denied parole again.  Floryan was attempting to evade City of Poughkeepsie Police when he crashed into a minivan, killing Shawn and Patricia Wonderly in 2012.  The victims’ young children were injured in the crash and instantly orphaned.

Floryan was sentenced to a term of 6.5 to 13 years in prison for killing both parents.  The sentence, dictated by state law, led to unsuccessful calls for a change in the law.

The 32-year-old Floryan was denied parole in 2019.  Floryan was eligible for a new parole hearing in June of this year but the date has been pushed back because of his behavior.  The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision has indicated that Floryan, an inmate at the Fishkill Correctional Facility, is not eligible to appear before the parole board again until December of 2023.

Larry Wonderly lost his son and daughter-in-law when Floryan broadsided their car on the eastbound arterial in 2012.  “Not a day goes by that I don’t think of my son and his wife. Shawn was only 37 when Ryan Floryan, with complete disregard for others, took the lives of Shawn and his wife,” said the man who still grieves.  ” The sentence Floryan received was a joke – a slap in the face of human decency because of an unfair statute about concurrent sentences.”

“There is some justice in this unfair world, knowing that he will not be released early and not be eligible for a parole hearing for over another year. Floryan hasn’t even reached the age at which Shawn died and will still have most of his life ahead of him when he is released.”
