Criminal with lengthy record arraigned for dragging cop with car

A town of Poughkeepsie cop pinned between a van and a car being extricated.

POUGHKEEPSIE – The 29-year-old criminal who dragged a Town of Poughkeepsie Police officer with a car in March was arraigned on April 5 in Dutchess County Court.  John Vanleuven Jr. pled not guilty and was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail on a $1 million bond or $500,000 cash bail.

The defendant, with a criminal record dating back to 2013, including one felony conviction and 13 misdemeanor convictions, was arraigned before Dutchess County Court Judge Jessica Segal after being indicted on one felony count of attempted assault, two felony counts of assault, felony reckless endangerment, and misdemeanor petit larceny for the March 15 incident that resulted in a town cop being dragged in a vehicle that was operated by Vanleuven.  The full account can be read here.

When arrested on March 15, Vanleuven had an open arrest warrant for felony burglary and bench warrants for felony robbery and misdemeanor petit larceny.  His lengthy criminal record includes convictions of felony possession of a forged instrument, harassment, petit larceny, and other offenses.

Vonleuven has open cases in both the Town and City of Poughkeepsie.

  • Criminal possession of a weapon in October of 2021
  • Menacing in October of 2021
  • Robbery in July of 2021
  • Resisting arrest

The open cases from the Town of Poughkeepsie Police include:

  • Petit larceny, resisting arrest, and obstruction of governmental administration in December of 2021
  • Criminal possession of stolen property and obstruction of governmental administration in December of 2021
  • Petit larceny in July of 2021
  • Robbery in July of 2021
  • Petit larceny in July of 2021.
