POUGHKEEPSIE – The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the rising number of telephone call scams in the region.

One of the latest scams in an attempt to get money from victims involves callers posing as police officers. On March 9, two people in Dutchess received calls from a person purporting to be “Sgt. Jason Mark” leaving a message to call him back ASAP about an urgent matter.

Both potential victims reported it to the sheriff’s office immediately.

The office said law enforcement would never attempt to satisfy a warrant or make promises to avoid prosecution by soliciting money.

An email scam is also popular is where a person receives a note about an order they supposedly purchased. The sheriff’s office says don’t respond, return a call to a number provided or click on any links.

If there are any doubts about the legitimacy of a call or email, call a local police agency.
