TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – A fire in the heating and ventilation (HVAC) unit on Thursday night brought Arlington and Poughkeepsie firefighters to 2600 South Road to extinguish the fire and make certain that the flames did not spread throughout the strip mall.
Firefighters responded to Mattress Firm at 2600 South Road on Thursday at approximately 7:20 p.m. for an active fire in the HVAC unit. Patrons and employees of stores and restaurants attached to Mattress Firm, the former Blockbuster Video, evacuated and braved the frigid air while the fire was extinguished.
Arlington firefighters used their ladder truck to get to the roof-mounted HVAC unit and extinguish the flames. Several other firefighters inspected the inside of the building for additional flames and the search had negative results.
