Former MTA special inspector sentenced for COVID-19 relief fraud

ALBANY – A 32-year-old Brooklyn man, Sean Andrew, was sentenced on Thursday to 30 months in prison for conspiring with an Ulster County man to fraudulently obtain more than $5.6 million in government-backed loans meant for businesses struggling with the financial effects of the pandemic.

Chief US District Judge Glenn Suddaby also imposed a two-year term of supervised release and ordered Andres to p-ay $1.3 million in restitution to his victims and forfeit $33,000, the balances o0f six bank accounts totaling over $365,000 and a 2019 Mercedes Benz.

Andre pled guilty last May to conspiring to help Jean Lavanture, 49, of Saugerties, obtain $4.3 million in Paycheck Protection Program loans that Lavanture controlled.

Lavanture was sentenced last month to 60 months in prison.
