GOSHEN – The committee of the Orange County Legislature that has oversight of the sheriff’s office and probation department, Thursday, approved $891,000 to purchase body cameras and Tasers for both agencies.

Undersheriff Ken Jones said the sheriff’s office welcomes the new tools.

“It’s part of police accountability,” he said. “I know the detractors of police are some of the people that pushed for this, but I don’t think in the long term it has worked out exactly as they anticipated. The implementation of body cams has shown that police officers are restrained and professional by and large across the nation. We expect that here too because our officers are very well trained.”

Both agencies will provide the body cams and Tasers for all officers in the field.
