KINGSTON – By a seven to two vote, the Kingston Common Council Thursday night decided to “abandon” a section of the Fair Street Extension so that developers of the Kingstonian project could create a public plaza.

Alderwoman Rita Worthington said she heard little about Fair Street from her constituents, and more about other issues, and the developers agreed to what they wanted.

“We went back to the developers and said we want the affordable housing, and the developers gave it to us. We said we wanted a discount on the parking fees and they gave it to us, and not only did we get those items, they are also giving us 277 public parking spaces, they are giving us a public pedestrian plaza, which would be maintained at the expense of the developers. They are also giving us public bathrooms, which will be maintained at the expense of the developers. They are also giving us a compliant pedestrian bridge, which will be maintained at the expense of the developers,” she said.

Council members Hirsh and Mohammad cast the two negative votes.
