LIBERTY – Two Liberty men, who were released under the state’s bail reform laws, were arrested again almost immediately.

Michael Maus, 24, was taken into custody on Sunday, February 6 on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and menacing after allegedly threatening another man with a knife.

Maus was arraigned and released on his own recognizance.

The next day, Village of Liberty Police officers on patrol in front of the Liberty Elementary School on North Main Street spotted Maus running down the street, armed with a wooden plank with nails protruding, chasing another man.

Officers intervened before the victim was harmed and Maus was re-arrested. This time he was remanded to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail.

In the other case, village police arrested James Esposito, 36, following a domestic incident in a residence on School Street. He was charged with attempted assault and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child for striking a woman and juvenile.

He was also issued a stay-away order on behalf of the victims, but an hour later, police officers on patrol observed Esposito trying to gain access to the residence and the victims.

Esposito was charged with criminal contempt and remanded to jail in lieu of $1,500 cash bail.
