NEWBURGH – Fire in an unoccupied two-story building at 240 First Street in the City of Newburgh late Monday night gutted the structure.

Fire Chief F.J. Spinelli said there were no utilities in the building. The cause of the fire is unknown; however, the structure was known to be a hangout for squatters.

The chief said his men arrived on the scene first but had to wait for mutual aid for back-up before they could enter the building.

Two city firefighters sustained minor injuries.

The building has been condemned by the city.
