MONTICELLO – The underage teens who engaged in a “sick tribute” to the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Connecticut nine years ago may face expulsion from their schools in Sullivan County.

The December 14 threats made on social media and by phone resulted in some schools being shut down and Sheriff Michael Schiff said the actions of the youths will not be tolerated.

“I’m sure they looked at it as being frivolous, but it’s not. These types of threats scare children and parents to death. People are traumatized when these things happen and there is no humor, there is nothing frivolous, there is nothing okay about this,” he said. “Their goal may have been to shut the school down so they could get a day off, but that’s not the way to do that and they will be held accountable.”

The sheriff said District Attorney Meagan Galligan is exploring expulsion from school and also having their parents pay restitution for the cost of the investigations.
