Head-on fatal accident caused by driver falling asleep, police say

TOWN OF MONTGOMERY – The fatal head-on crash on Route 17K in the area of Winding Hills in the Town of Montgomery last week was caused by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel, Montgomery Town Police reported on Monday.

Police said when Bernnon Hernandez, 20, of Monroe, fell asleep-, his car crossed over the double yellow line and struck an oncoming car, killing 44-year-old Eileen Habesland.

Hernandez remained at the scene and was cooperative with police. Investigators said there were no signs of impairment detected and Hernandez was issued a summons for crossing a double yellow line.
