MONTICELLO – A total of 402 challenged absentee ballots will be opened and counted by the Sullivan County Board of Elections today (Monday) in the Fallsburg town supervisor’s race between incumbent Democrat Steven Vegliante and challenger Katherine Rappaport. She ran on the Preserve Sullivan ballot line.

Vegliante and town board candidates Nathan Steingart and Michael Bensimon took the issue of those absentee ballots to State Supreme Court, seeking to have them tossed claiming many were filed by Brooklyn residents with summer homes in the town who voted in both locations.

In a six-page decision filed on Friday, December 10, Acting Supreme Court Justice Mark Meddaugh ordered that the board of elections is permitted to complete its canvass of those ballots and that is expected to take place on Monday.

The addition of those ballots may sway the results of the elections in Rappaport’s favor, ousting Vegliante, who has been in the lead until now.
