Boxing in NFA boys' room on Friday

NEWBURGH – At Newburgh Free Academy-Main, a new unsanctioned sport has emerged. Mid-Hudson News has obtained a video recorded in a west wing boys’ bathroom showing two boys boxing on Friday.

The pugilists, wearing leather boxing gloves, were surrounded by several other boys watching the activity.

It could not be learned how the gloves were brought into the school, but backpacks may be a good guess.

A school district spokeswoman could not be reached for comment on Friday afternoon and a spokesperson for the Newburgh Teachers’ Association did not return a call for comment.

After a violent fight between girls in the hall days ago, top district officials said they would beef up security in and around NFA. That fight involved former students who were let in the building, and current students.

Girls were knocked to the floor, punched and kicked before school security guards rushed in to break it up.

One generation ago the popular song “Smokin’ in the Boys’ Room” exemplified a regular activity in high school boys’ bathrooms. That has apparently been modified, at least at NFA, with the new activity.
