NEWBURGH – Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson (D, Newburgh) is sponsoring a gun buyback event on Sunday, December 19 from noon to 4 p.m. at 104 South Lander Street in the City of Newburgh, to be run by the Newburgh Police Department.

Those who turn in guns will receive gift cards from BJ’s or Walmart. No questions will be asked of those handing in guns and no identification will be required.

“The City of Newburgh had stayed relatively quiet throughout the pandemic, so the current uptick in shootings and gun-related incidents are of major concern. I am committed to keeping our communities safe and have fought hard for common-sense gun safety measures. I have secured Assembly funding to host this buyback event, because we need to do all we can to get guns off the streets.”

The schedule of gift cards to be exchanged for guns is:

Handguns – $500

Assault Weapons – $300
Modified Rifles/Shotguns – $150
Rifles – $100
Antique/Non-working Guns – $50

The rules for this gun buyback event are:

  • Guns must be unloaded and placed in a plastic or paper bag
  • If transporting a gun by car, gun must be unloaded and transported in the trunk of the car.
  • This is an amnesty program and no questions will be asked and identification is not required
  • You may surrender as many guns as you wish
  • Active or retired law enforcement officers and licensed gun dealers will not be eligible to participate in the program.
