RHINEBECK – The Village of Rhinebeck is in the process of replacing its two highway department trucks that were destroyed by fire back on September 25.

The replacement for the smaller of the two is just about ready and the replacement for the larger vehicle is months away, said Mayor Gary Bassett.

“We’re fortunate because there is a long delay today to get trucks due to the supply shortages, but we were able to find one that was in the process of being built and put a request on it and hold it and now we signed the purchase orders to reserve it for us, but that one won’t be ready until March of next year,” he said.

An insurance settlement of more than $227,000 will pay for the new vehicles.

Bassett said the fire that started in one of the trucks parked outside the highway garage appears to have been electrical in nature. The flames jumped to the other vehicle, which was parked next to it, resulting in damage to both.
