KINGSTON – As solar power on individual buildings and solar farms continue to gain popularity as a source of renewable energy, Ulster County is embarking on solar mapping.

Legislator Manna Jo Greene, chairwoman of the Energy and Environment Committee, told fellow lawmakers Monday night that the project is using a model created by Scenic Hudson.

“We are planning to do this four times a year so that more and more municipalities will know where in their communities would be ideal for solar, where is not so good or really needs to be avoided and protected and sometimes there are combinations of that and where there are areas that would be good if the grid were expanded and they could interconnect,” she said.

Solar power is seen as one renewable source of energy to wean away from fossil fuels.
