NEWBURGH – Christmas came a few months early for the City of Newburgh as State Sen. James Skoufis gave the city $100,000 for new street cameras and thanked the city police department for its tenuous service during the Covid pandemic.

“There’s an existing camera system here in Newburgh; it needs to be upgraded. It serves as both a deterrent (because) folks know there are cameras around and when the police are watching for crime, it’s less likely crime will happen,” said Skoufis. “Just as importantly, when it does happen, the police are able to respond as quickly as possible and catch the perpetrators as quickly as possible. So, without cameras, it’s difficult sometimes to do those things.”

After presenting the big check, Skoufis read a proclamation from his office, largely symbolic, thanking the city police force for working through the pandemic era.

“We really commemorate the work, especially over the last year and half, that the Newburgh police department and all of our local police departments have done,” he said. “They have risen above and beyond their responsibilities to keep our communities safe during these unprecedented times.”
