WASHINGTON – Startup airline Norse Atlantic Airways has applied to the Federal Aviation Administration for permission to offer service between European cities and New York Stewart International Airport at Newburgh.

The Norway-based company is planning to initially begin scheduled passenger service to the United States in the summer of 2022 with transatlantic operations between Oslo, Norway and Stewart, Fort Lauderdale, and Los Angeles.

The airline plans on using Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to provide affordable fares between Europe and the U.S.

“Stewart International Airport is an attractive and efficient airport that serves greater New York, which has a huge catchment area of several million customers,” Norse CEO and founder Bjorn Tore Larsen told Mid-Hudson News. “We are grateful for the constructive dialogue with the airport management and the enthusiasm they have displayed about the potential service to Oslo.”

He said as a new carrier in the U.S. market, Norse Atlantic “plans to partner with local communities, tourism organizations, businesses and labor to bring our new high-quality product to the U.S. market and to create new, good-paying jobs for Americans.”

The airline will initially provide service with three Boeing 787s and will expand over time to other points in Europe to meet developing passenger demand and route expansion.

The first flight is expected to take off in late first quarter or early second quarter of next year.

Norse would be the first overseas airline to use the new Stewart international arrivals building, which was initially designed to accommodate flights by Norwegian Air, the former airline that flew to the United Kingdom.
