Area municipal unemployment rates drop

ALBANY – While several municipalities in the Hudson Valley have higher unemployment rates than the region’s 5.3 percent rate in July, they are significantly lower than July 2020 rates, a sign that more people are returning to the workforce.

The City of Mount Vernon joblessness rate this last July was 8.4 percent compared with 18.4 percent one year earlier, according to the State Labor Department.

The City of Poughkeepsie, which had the second highest rate of unemployment this July, at 8.1 percent, was half of what it was in July 2020, at 16.9 percent.

The Town of Monroe had 8.0 percent joblessness this past July compared with 21.1 percent one year earlier.

The City of Newburgh’s rate of joblessness this July was 7.5 percent while the City of Yonkers’ rate stood at 7.3 percent.
