NEWBURGH – Newburgh City Councilman Omari Shakur broke his silence on Monday saying he felt “intimidated” when he was pulled over by a state trooper recently for running a red light in the city.

Shakur told Mid-Hudson News on Monday that he was unnerved by the actions of the officer.

“When they told me to get back in my car, they refused to close my door. He had his hand on his gun. So, basically that is why I was arrested because he told me to give him my license and registration and I told him I felt intimidated right now with his hand on his gun and he refused to close my door,” he said.

The police report quoted Shakur, whose legal name is Raymond Bryant, as saying, “F**k you, arrest me.”

In a brief appearance in Newburgh City Court on Monday, Judge Paul Trachte scheduled a lawyers’ conference for a future date.
