MONTICELLO – As a show of gratitude to the 696 Sullivan County Government employees who have been working on the front lines for 18 months during the pandemic, they will each be receiving “hazard pay.”

The county legislature voted on Thursday to give each worker $500 for working in the face of the deadly pandemic.

Legislature Chairman Rob Doherty had proposed another financial “thank you,” but that was rejected by his colleagues.

“They want to give them a one-time stipend where I wanted to give them a stipend that would last forever and get built off their raises,” he said.

As it stands, it will cost the county $348,000 for the additional benefit for the government workers.
