ALBANY – On Monday, the State Department of Environmental Conservation will hold its first public hearings on Danskammer LLC’s proposal to expand replace the former electric generating plant with a new, modern gas power facility in the Town of Newburgh.

The proposal to expand Danskammer’s current peaker plant operation has been met with community opposition. Activists see the project as a test both of New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act and of incoming Governor Hochul’s administration, set to take office next week.

Officials of the new Danskammer plant say it will provide clean energy for the region.

If the new Danskammer is approved, it will be the first power plant in the state to move forward under New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, setting up what opponents call “a critical climate battlefield for New York’s next governor.”

The hearings will be held at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday, August 23 virtually via WebEx.
