Superintendent Dr. Roberto Padilla outlines school re-opening plans during a Zoom town hall session

NEWBURGH – When school reopens on September 1 in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, classes will be conducted in person. Superintendent Dr. Roberto Padilla made the announcement during a Zoom town hall session on Wednesday afternoon.

The superintendent expects a mask mandate and three-foot social distancing to be in place.

“The CDC and the American Pediatrics Association have advised that students be in school. You have two of the biggest agencies and they ae saying children need to be back in school,” he said. “It is not that we are making this decision to have children be back in school in a vacuum. We are not. We are actually following what the medical experts are saying, and they are saying children need to be back in school.”

Padilla also “strongly encouraged” children over the age of 12 to be vaccinated, subject to their parents’ approval.

As far as school sports are concerned, the superintendent expects masks to be worn by athletes and spectators during indoor activities.
