POUGHKEEPSIE – City Councilmember Yvonne Flowers is teaming up with SNUG and residents of Lent Street to host a block party for the neighborhood.  The Saturday, August 14 event is being held on Lent Street from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., is free to attend, and there will be food, music, and games for the entire family to play.

Flowers represents the 5th Ward on the council which encompasses a large portion of the city’s northside.  The area has seen a rise in violent crimes and numerous reports of gunshots in recent months and is using the event to bring the neighborhood together to hear the residents’ concerns.  “We need to all work together to keep Poughkeepsie safe.  By getting everyone together to talk, we can work on solutions,” Flowers said.

SNUG (guns spelled backward) is an outreach program through Family Services, Inc.  Funded in part by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), the SNUG program focuses on youth between the ages of 14 and 24 who are at high risk for involvement with gun violence. The SNUG team develops and implements risk-reduction strategies to reduce that involvement with the goal of saving lives and helping individuals turn their lives around.
