POUGHKEEPSIE – A few minutes into July 8, employees on the Mid Hudson Bridge notified the City of Poughkeepsie Police that a person had jumped from the span into the Hudson River. Officers were dispatched to the bridge and secured an “Unoccupied” vehicle parked on the bridge in the vicinity of where the person went over the railing.
A search operation was initiated while police secured the vehicle and began an investigation.
The search efforts were unsuccessful until Sunday, July 10. On that day, members of the Chelsea Yacht Club in Wappinger notified NY State Police of a body in the river, near the boats.
State Troopers retrieved the corpse and contacted the City of Poughkeepsie Police to advise that the body recovered was possibly the person that went into the river on July 8.
The body was transported to the Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. Earlier this week, the findings indicated that the body was the person that went missing on July 8.
City of Poughkeepsie Police confirmed late Thursday evening that the body was positively identified and was the person that jumped from the bridge on July 8.
Police officials declined to release any additional information regarding the identity of the person pending notification of the decedent’s relatives.
