WAPPINGERS FALLS – Strong winds and heavy rains tore through the Mid-Hudson on Wednesday evening toppling trees and power lines.

Wappingers Falls was among the hardest hit with dozens of trees downed. While most fell across roads and took down power lines, at least one house, at 51 Spring Street, took a direct hit from a falling tree.

A husband and wife said they were eating dinner with their five-year-old daughter when the storm rolled through. They ran to the basement when the trees started to hit their home. They got out safely after the storm passed.

Others in the village said it was the most intense storm they ever witnessed.

A shed was tossed into the roadway at High and Mill Streets.

On the other side of the intersection, a huge tree fell, leaving a large utility pole leaning to one side.

Downed trees and power lines were spotted all over the village.

Much of the village was without power well into the overnight hours.
