KINGSTON – The Kingston Police Department’s Groceries for Guns program has brought in dozens of weapons in return for Hannaford gift cards.

Launched on March 26, Kingston PD has collected 26 handguns, 22, rifles, 11 shotguns, one musket and 20 pellet guns.

“We are extremely proud of the Groceries for Guns initiative, which has removed 8 guns from our community and has potentially saved lives,” said Mayor Steven Noble. “This is one of the many proactive programs that the Kingston Police Department has initiated in recent weeks and is part of ongoing efforts to stop gun violence in our community.”

The city, meanwhile, will conduct a Gun Buyback event in coordination with State Attorney General Letitia James on Saturday, June 5. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Andy Murphy Midtown Neighborhood Center at 467 Broadway.

Gift cards will be provided depending upon the type of weapon turned in.

A $25. card will be provided for nonworking or antique firearms.

A $75. card will be provided for rifles and shotguns.

A $150. card will be provided for handguns.

A $250. card will be provided for assault weapons.

Anyone wishing to bring a firearm to the event should make sure it is unloaded and transported in the trunk of their vehicle.

The initiative is open to anyone in the City of Kingston, exclusive licensed gun dealers, and active retired law enforcement officers, who are not eligible to participate.

This is an amnesty program and no questions will be asked.
