POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County’s first phase of the countywide Procedural Justice & Implicit Bias Training Initiative has been completed.

The first phase of this training initiative started on October 19, 2020, and ended on March 31, 2021. During the first phase, 13 procedural justice training classes were conducted at the Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Center. City of Poughkeepsie Police Lieutenants Sean McCarthy and John Zeltman, NYS Master Instructors, conducted the training.

A total of 287 police officers from various law enforcement agencies throughout the county completed the eight-hour State Division of Criminal Justice Services Procedural Justice (Principled Policing) class.

The second phase of this initiative is scheduled to begin on May 5 with eight-hour DCJS implicit bias training classes conducted at the Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Center. Classes will be held during the months of May and June. Classes will resume in September and run through December providing Dutchess County police agencies numerous opportunities to assign their officers to the training.

With the support of the county and City of Poughkeepsie government leaders, the Sheriff’s Office will continue to work collaboratively with the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department to lead this training initiative and deliver training for all police officers throughout the county.
