Port Jervis man arrested in Liberty for illegal gun possession

LIBERTY – A Port Jervis man was remanded to the Sullivan County Jail without bail after he was found in illegal possession of a weapon.

State Police were called to a fight in progress at a Sunoco gas station on North Main Street in the Village of Liberty on Sunday. When troopers arrived, they observed one injured person being treated by Mobile Medic EMS personnel.

Another individual was seen leaving the area and when troopers stopped the man, identified as Nyyair Carney, 23, of Port Jervis, to ask him about the altercation, they spotted a gun in his waistband.

With the assistance of Sullivan County Sheriff’s deputies, the revolver was removed from Carney’s possession and he was placed in the back of a State Police vehicle. While he was being transported to the barracks, he began banging his head on the rear passenger door of the police vehicle. As a result, he was brought t Garnet Health Catskill where he was treated and released back to the custody of the police.

Carney was charged with two felony counts of criminal possession of a weapon, arraigned and held without bail.
