SUNY Orange enrollment is up.

MIDDLETOWN – Forty percent of SUNY students are faced with food insecurity and the college campuses have been working to help alleviate their concerns by operating food pantries.

In an effort to provide proper meals to those in need, SUNY has granted Orange County Community College and Sullivan County Community College each a grant to purchase refrigeration for their food pantries.

SUNY Chancellor James Malatras came to SUNY Orange in Middletown on Tuesday to announce the grants.

“The way we do our food pantries is we do it in a non-judgmental way,” he said. “Just because you may not have the economic means doesn’t make you any less of a human being or any less of a student.”

SUNY Orange Student Senate President Nicolas Kanan said the food pantry is “an essential part of the overall support programming provided to students” at the college.
