Damaged Belleayre Mountain Lodge

HIGHMOUNT – A Christmas Day deluge of rain has caused melting snow and mud to break free from the ridge of Belleayre Mountain and crash into the ski lodge, closing the slopes until at least Sunday, December 27.

The mountain opened for skiing and snowboarding approximately two weeks ago, and conditions were boosted by the recent severe snowstorm that brought a few feet of snow to the mountain.

The rain that started Thursday night and continued through Christmas morning dumped 6.5 inches on the already melting snow.

According to the ski center, “The supersaturated snow from the Yahoo trail let loose and slid into the Overlook Lodge.  The lodge sustained significant damage, with windows and doors broken.”

According to officials, there were no reported injuries.
