MIDDLETOWN – The elaborate Middletown City skatepark was reopened on Monday, but if the users do not shape up, it may be short lived.

Mayor Joseph DeStefano said the young people using it have not been wearing face coverings and have torn down signs. He spoke to some of the skaters, some of whom were nasty to him.

DeStefano said it is up to their parents to keep them under control at the park.

“You are now responsible for conveying the message to your children; it is mostly children who are using it – young people in their teens and younger – that if they are not wearing a mask and they are not social distancing on the skatepark, that we will fence it in for the rest of the season. It is just as simple as that,” he said.

DeStefano said he is not going to use police resources to patrol the skatepark and he will give users two more days. If they do not shape up, he will shut it down.
