ALBANY – Swimming in lakes and on shores in New York will resume on Friday, May 22, the start of the Memorial Day Weekend, Governor Cuomo announced on Friday.

Swimming in public pools will remain prohibited.

The governor said he is allowing swimming as it is also being approved in New Jersey, Connecticut and Delaware.

When asked during his daily briefing if he was forced to approve swimming because the other states will allow it, but rather if he did not approve it, millions of New Yorkers would flood the beaches in the other states.

The governor had a stern warning about COVID-19. “Do not play with this virus,” he warned. “Government can’t keep you safe; only you can keep yourself safe.”

People venturing outside should wear face coverings should wash their hands with soap and water and use hand sanitizer.
