VALHALLA – The prohibition against evictions in New York State is set to expire in June, but because of the uncertainty related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Cuomo, Thursday, extended that ban for an additional 60 days.

Under the executive order, residents and commercial renters cannot be evicted for nonpayment of rent because of economic impacts related to the virus.

Cuomo has extended the current ban to August 20.

“I hope it gives families a deep breath. Nothing can happen until August 20th and then we’ll figure out between now and August 20th what the situation is,” he said during his daily briefing, held at New York Medical College in Valhalla on Thursday.

The governor acknowledged that the ban on evictions for nonpayment will place a hardship on landlords, but he said having a roof over one’s head, especially now, is a top priority.
