POUGHKEEPSIE – City of Poughkeepsie officials are reminding the public that while most of the parks remain open during the coronavirus crisis, playground facilities are closed, and it is imperative residents use social distancing and take other steps to protect public health.
“Getting outdoors to walk, jog, hike, ride a bicycle, or visit a park is a great way to keep both your body and mind healthy,” said Mayor Rob Rolison. “But it’s critically important to maintain proper distance when doing these activities.”
When in public, people must practice social distancing of at least six feet from others and must wear a mask when in close proximity to others.
The city has created a “COVID-19 Parks Response Team” composed of city employees and community volunteers to keep an eye on the parks as the weather gets warmer and as their usage increases. The team will be observing and reporting to the city about any inappropriate usage of park facilities or anything related to the parks that need attention. 
The public is reminded to follow all recommendations and guidance from state and federal health officials, including avoiding large gatherings. Residents are encouraged to avoid games that require close contact, such as basketball, football, or soccer. They also should not share equipment, such as bicycles, helmets, balls, or Frisbees. At this time, the city’s dog park, skate park, basketball and tennis courts are closed.
“We are taking these measures in accordance with state guidelines,” said Mayor Rolison. The mayor also said “We know people want to use our parks for a variety of activities, but these limits make sense at this point. We look forward to the day when our parks become fully operational again. In the meantime, we appreciate the public’s cooperation as we take measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus.”
