NEW YORK – With only essential employees going to work because of the coronavirus, ridership on Metro-North Railroad is down to bare bones – with only five percent of the usual number of commuters riding the rails.

The railroad is also looking out for the health of its workers by placing them on a rotational program, said railroad President Cathy Rinaldi.

“We’ve got people on-call working at home or staying at home and then other people working onsite and this is designed to have people who are on call from home, but they are isolated from the workplace with the view of keeping them as healthy as possible and we call them in if we need to depending upon how the virus takes its course over the next couple of weeks,” she said.

As of Friday, 66 of the railroad’s 6,000 employees were tested positive with 505 quarantined and 318 returned to work.
