SUFFERN – A two-hour standoff with a man holed up in a house on Orange Avenue in the Village of Suffern Friday night ended when police lobbed tear gas into the residence and he gave up.

Suffern Police Chief Clarke Osborn said around 8:15 p.m., they received a call from a family member that a distraught man was inside and possibly wanted to harm himself. He was armed with a high-powered rifle.

Suffern Police officers responded and attempted to make contact with the man, who refused to come out or talk to them.

Police from Ramapo, Mahwah, the Rockland County SWAT team and State Police were called in to assist.

Chief Osborn said the man still refused to come out and was yelling, screaming and acting irrationally.

When he finally came out once the teargas was deployed, officers found a loaded 30-30 rifle inside.

The man, whose name police did not make public, was transported to Montefiore Nyack Hospital for evaluation by the Ramapo Valley Ambulance Corps with assistance from Rockland Paramedics.
