NEWBURGH – Two Newburgh Town Police officers are being credited with saving a 50-year-old man who was found behind the wheel of a car that had struck a tree at the intersection of West Meadow Wind Lane and Delafield Lane.

The man, who was alone in the vehicle, was found unconscious and unresponsive.

Unable to detect any pulse or breathing by the victim, Officers Matthew Zuniga and Michael Surita initiated CPR with a bag valve mask and administered several shocks from an automated external defibrillator until the Town of Newburgh Volunteer Ambulance Corps members arrived on the scene.

The victim began breathing on his own and was transported to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital for further treatment.

Chief Donald Campbell said the accident is believed to have been caused by a medical event suffered by the driver.
