COLD SPRING – The brush fire at Breakneck Mountain lit up the nighttime sky Monday night and by the same time Tuesday, it was declared out.

What caused the fire that scorched 150 acres of mountainside remains unclear; however, a passing Metro-North train may have sparked it, officials said.

Vehicles parked near the railroad tracks along Route 9 in the Cold Spring area were damaged by the nearby flames. Some of the vehicles were owned by commuters, but others belonged to people, who took to the mountain in that popular hiking location.

There were no reports of injuries.

Firefighters from Dutchess, Putnam, and Orange counties were involved in the firefighting operations.
