NEWBURGH – City officials are planning to conduct a fact-finding mission into conditions at the city-owned Mullens and Fogarty low-income housing facilities in Newburgh.

One resident, Veronica Artis, told the city council Monday night both apartment complexes have issues negatively impacting their tenants.

“They have found people overdosed in the stairwells. They have had retaliation as far as no heat for three days or more. They have security issues. We are supposed to have cameras on both sites – he (the management) just got a $250,000 grant. At the last board meeting in January, I asked was the camera system working in the Mullens. It is still not up and running at this time,” she said.

Councilman Omari Shakur wants to take a close look at the situation.

“This is about looking out for the children and older people in our community and if we can’t look out for the children and if we can’t look out for our older people, what does this say about us as a city,” he said.

Council members plan on talking to management and inspecting the facilities in person.
