NEW PALTZ – Residents of the Village and Town of New Paltz are being urged not to drink the water because of a smell and taste problem.  Ulster County Health Department officials said this impacts consumers served by the Village of New Paltz Water and Town of New Paltz Water Districts are affected.

Because of the ongoing problem, New Paltz schools, administrative offices, and BOCES facilities are closed today (Tuesday). SUNY New Paltz has pallets of one-gallon bottles of water delivered to campus. The water is available to students on campus and a tanker of potable water is available for students in front of Peregrine Dining Hall.  The college has provided additional information to the students via email.

“We have a 6,000-gallon tanker at village hall already. People need to bring containers,” said Deputy Mayor KT Tobin.  There are ‘water buffalos’ with 500 gallons of water at Meadowbrook apartments near unit 512 and another “water buffalo” at the Huguenot Park apartment complex at 45 N. Chestnut Street.

Residents need to bring containers for filling.

The village is also working on deploying water to at least one more location in the village and will provide info about that later today.

The village and county officials also said the state is helping to expedite the testing and the village hopes to have to results within 24 hours.
